Long-term disability

Get long-term cash support when you can’t work.

How would you pay the bills if you got seriously sick or hurt? Optional long-term disability (LTD) coverage can pick up where short-term disability leaves off, providing regular cash support when you’re disabled and unable to work for months or even years.

  • Pick a plan. Log into online enrollment, select long-term disability coverage, and pick the plan that’s right for you.
  • Check your rates. You’ll see your cost per pay period once you make a selection. It’s based on your age and the plan you pick. You can also find your cost with Benefits rates.
  • Proof of Good Health. Truck drivers will also need to answer a few health questions if they are enrolling after their initial enrollment period.

If you have any questions about the questionnaire, check in with Lincoln at 1-877-353-6404.

When can I enroll in long-term disability (LTD) benefits?

You can enroll during your initial enrollment period. This is when you first become eligible for benefits, and it depends on your job classification. If you've just become eligible for benefits, check your personalized Benefits Guide to see your enrollment deadline.

You may still enroll after your initial enrollment period during these timeframes:

  • During Annual Enrollment, when all eligible associates can sign up or make changes.
  • Within 60 days of an “election change event”, like marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, or a change in your employment that affects benefits coverage.

If you have questions about when you can enroll, or the enrollment process, call People Services at 1-800-421-1362. When it’s time, enroll online.

If you enroll when you first become eligible, coverage begins on your 12-month anniversary for full-time hourly associates and on your hire date for salaried or driver associates.

If you do not enroll when you first become eligible, you can add coverage following an election change event (coverage starts the next pay period) or during Annual Enrollment (coverage starts January 1 of the next plan year).

You’ll find complete details in the Associate Benefits Book.

Drivers who add or increase coverage after they first become eligible will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire called “proof of good health.” Lincoln needs to approve coverage, and the start date will depend on when the approved is received and the type of enrollment session.

If you enroll following an election change event, coverage will start the first day of the pay period after the date your approval is received from Lincoln.

If you enroll during Annual Enrollment, coverage starts on the later of: January 1 of the plan year; or the first day of the pay period after the date your approval is received from Lincoln.

You’ll find complete details in the Associate Benefits Book.

Your cost is based on your age and income. You’ll find your cost on Benefit rates.

  • Your cost per pay period is deducted from all eligible wages, including bonuses.
  • You’re not required to pay for long-term disability from your short-term disability payments. But if you receive any other payments through Walmart payroll, long-term disability premiums will be withheld.

You'll find complete details in the Associate Benefits Book.

Your long-term disability (LTD) benefits are based on the LTD plan you selected during enrollment.

  • The Basic LTD plan pays up to 50% of your average monthly wage for as long as you’re disabled, up to normal retirement age (65) or slightly beyond.
  • The Enhanced LTD plan pays up to 60% of your average monthly wage for as long as you’re disabled, up to normal retirement age (65) or slightly beyond.
  • LTD benefits may be adjusted to work together with other benefits like Social Security.
  • Approved LTD benefits are paid biweekly and continue as long as you remain disabled, as defined by the Plan, or until you meet the plan maximum benefit period.

If you become disabled within the first 12 months after your coverage becomes effective, and you were treated for the disabling condition in the three (3) months before electing coverage, you may not be eligible for benefits. If you increase your coverage and become disabled within the first 12 months after the increase becomes effective, and you were treated for the disabling condition in the three (3) months before increasing coverage, you may not be eligible for the increased benefit amount.

You'll find complete details in the Associate Benefits Book.

If you’re enrolled in a long-term disability (LTD) coverage and nearing the end of your short-term disability benefit period, Sedgwick will refer your claim to the LTD carrier, Lincoln Financial Group (Lincoln), to start the LTD claim process.

  • A representative from Lincoln will reach out to help you with your application for LTD benefits. Please be sure to respond to their request to prevent delay with ongoing claim processing.
  • Once your claim has been filed, Lincoln can help you with questions about your LTD claim status or benefits, including payment timelines. You can reach out to them at 877-353-6404.

There is long-term disability (LTD) coverage specifically for OTR drivers, and costs differ from the LTD coverage offered to other associates. See Benefit Rates.

  • Like other associates, OTR drivers can choose the 50% Basic LTD plan or the 60% Enhanced LTD plan.
  • Drivers can also choose the maximum period for which LTD benefits may be paid:
    • For up to five years of disability, or
    • For the full duration of your disability up to normal retirement age (65) or slightly beyond
  • If you enroll or increase your coverage outside of your initial enrollment period, an extra step is required. You’ll be asked to complete a Proof of Good Health form, that Lincoln will review. Your coverage will be subject to approval by Lincoln.

You can make changes to your long-term disability (LTD) coverage elections within 60 days of the start of the pay period in which you become an truck driver. You can enroll online, or chat with a People Services representative at One.Walmart.com/BenefitsChat or call 1-800-421-1362.

  • If you’re enrolled in LTD coverage on the date, you become a full time truck driver, you'll automatically be transferred to Truck Driver LTD at the same level of coverage you were enrolled in (50% or 60%) and defaulted to the five-year option. You can:
    • Continue at your current level of coverage (basic or enhanced) with the five-year option
    • Continue at your current level of coverage with the full-duration option*
    • Change your coverage level, and select the five-year or full-duration option*
    • Drop coverage.
  • If you aren’t enrolled in LTD coverage on the date you become a full time truck driver and want to add it, you will need to enroll in Truck Driver LTD. You may be required to provide Proof of Good Health if you were previously eligible to enroll in LTD and elected not to.

*If you miss the 60-day window and later increase your coverage level or duration, Proof of Good Health may be required.
